Our hadith books are full of scientific evidence of these superior and spontaneous efforts.

The first Muslims, who divided their days between earning a living and studying for the purpose of learning the Sunnah, naturally encountered the desire and effort of the new Muslims to learn the Book and the Sunnah as new countries were conquered. Both the governors and agents appointed by the caliphs and the companions who were in the armies of conquest as fighters, acted with the awareness that their primary duty was to teach and convey the message. Many of the jurist companions settled in different regions and tried to spread the knowledge of the Book and the Sunnah there.

The scholarly efforts of the companions undoubtedly led the tabi'in who saw them to act in the same way. The tabi'in, who were not content with the information they received from the companions in their own region, wanted to go to Medina, the cradle of the sunnah (danis-sunnah), the first capital of Islam, and increase their knowledge. Consequently, a very lively and active scholarly life began to be lived. Thus, the scholarly journeys called rihla, which would later be implemented by almost all hadith scholars and ruled as recommended, were initiated.

On the other hand, social, political and theological turmoil also gave rise to the duty of conveying the message and the care and meticulousness of not attributing anything that did not belong to the Prophet Muhammad, and as a result, the initiation of some rules and scientific efforts.

Just as it is natural that every scientific activity will be carried out according to certain principles, the repetition of the same things also requires that certain rules be found, or if they are not, they must be established and adhered to. In other words, everything has a method. For this reason, the scientific activities we mentioned above also required the determination of certain rules, and these rules are the principles of hadith usul, which will later form the subject of independent books.

Let us admit that the correct transmission of the sunnah material, the sound preservation of these texts, their education, training and evaluation, and the initiation of all kinds of studies and activities that will help this evaluation were the lot and honor of the honorable companions. The honorable companions pioneered the transmission of hadith texts, that is, they established the science of riwaya al-hadith, and they also established the indispensable rules of the event of narration and laid the first foundations of the science of diraya al-hadith.

Before the Muslims, no nation had ever thought of conducting any research to determine the reliability of the narrators in transmission and narration, and linking this to certain rules. Events and narrations were simply narrated. Rarely, a chain of narration of one or two names was mentioned, and most of the time, it was not felt necessary. For this reason, the science of the Usul of Hadith, which is based on the careful study of the personal situations of those who narrated the hadith texts, and the mention of the chain of narration, has become a virtue unique to Muslims.

Hadith Usul, which means “a set of rules that enable understanding the situations of the chain of narration and the text”, is a scientific discipline that Muslims found and developed in the early days. Its subject is the chain of narration and the text in terms of rejection and acceptance.”
