Many hadiths have been mentioned on this subject. The meanings of some of them are as follows:</p> <p> 1) From Amr bin Hurays (RA), he said: “I saw the Prophet (PBUH) on the pulpit with a black turban on his head, one end of it hanging between his shoulders.” (1881)<br /> In this hadith, it is stated that the Prophet wore a turban while on the pulpit and that this turban was black. As it will be seen in some other hadiths, the Prophet sometimes wore a black turban and sometimes a white turban.<br /> 2) The Prophet (PBUH) wrapped the turban around the head of Abdurrahman bin Awf and let it hang down from the back of his head, four fingers or a little less or more than that, and said: "Wrap your turban like this, because doing so is more open and beautiful." (882)<br /> 3) “Indeed, Gabriel (AV) descended upon the Prophet (SAW) wearing a black turban with the ends of the turban hanging down behind him.” (He came to him in this attire.) (883)<br /> 4) Rukane (RA) said: The Prophet (PBUH) said:<br /> “The difference between us and the polytheists is that we wrap turbans over skullcaps. (884) </p> <p> The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi.<br /> The word "Kalânis" in this hadith is the plural form of the word "kalensüve". Kalensüve is a skullcap and similar things worn under the turban. Wearing a turban over a skullcap is the dress of Muslims. Wearing a skullcap without wrapping a turban is the dress of polytheists.</p> <p> In this hadith, opposing the polytheists is encouraged by wrapping turbans over skullcaps.<br /> 5) In a hadith narrated by Tirmidhi with an authentic chain of narration, it is stated: “Ibn Umar (RA) used to let the ends of his turban hang down between his shoulders.” (885)</p> <p> Although it is recommended to let the turban hang from the back, there is no dislike in abandoning it. Because, the Prophet (PBUH) did not always let the turban hang down. Sometimes he would wear only his skullcap without the turban. Sometimes he would wear only his turban without the skullcap. Many times he would wear both of them together.</p> <p> The length of his turban was seven spans. The caps of the Companions of the Noble Companions were next to their heads. They were not high or long.<br /> Because it is stated in a hadith narrated by Tirmidhi: “The caps of the companions of the Prophet (PBUH) were plain.”<br /> The word "Kimâm" in this hadith is the plural form of the word "kümme". Kümme means small skullcap. (886)</p> <p> 7) In the chapter of Kitab al-Jihad, there is the following narration by Ibn Abi Asim: Abu Musa informed us, (he said): Osman bin Omar narrated from Zubayr bin Jawan, who narrated from a person from the Ansar, and he said: “A person came to Ibn Omar (RA). He said to him: O Abu Abdurrahman, is it Sunnah to wear a turban?” He said: “Yes (it is Sunnah).”<br /> 8) The Prophet (PBUH) said to Abdurrahman bin Awf (RA): (O Abdurrahman,) Go and put on your clothes (make them loose and comfortable) and put on your weapon. He went and came to the Prophet, having fulfilled the Prophet’s order. The Prophet shortened the part of Abdurrahman’s turban that was hanging down. Then he put his turban on him and let it hang down from the front and back.”<br /> 9) In a hadith narrated by Nafi from Ibn Umar (RAM), it is stated as follows:</p> <p> “Ibn ‘Umar (RA) said: The Prophet (PBUH) put a turban made of burqa on the head of Abdurrahman bin Awf and let it hang down four fingers from his back. Then he said (to Abdurrahman bin Awf): ‘Wear a turban like this.’<br /> Imam-i Malik (RA) said: Wearing a turban, wrapping oneself in clothes, and wearing clogs are among the customs of the Arabs. When Imam-i Mallik was asked about the situation of a person who wraps a turban but does not wrap a part of it under his chin, he said: "Wearing a turban without wrapping a part of it under his chin is a custom of the Nibtites, it is not a dress worn by the people (the Companions of the Noble Prophet).<br /> However, if the turban is small (does not reach under the chin), or if he wears the turban that way at home, or if he wears it when he is sick, then there is no harm or difficulty in that. (That is, he may not wear it under the chin.)" he said.<br /> 10) From Abdullah bin Bishr (RA), he said: The Prophet (PBUH) sent Hazrat Ali (RA) to a place. He dressed him in a black turban and let it hang from his back and from his left shoulder. (887)<br /> 11) The Holy Prophet called Hazrat Ali on the day of the well of Hum. He dressed him in a turban and let a part of it hang down from his back. Then he said to him: "Wear the turban like this, for indeed the turban is a sign of Islam and a veil between the Muslims and the polytheists. It is a garment that separates them from one another."<br /> 12) Narrated by Khalid Ibn Ma'dan (RA) from the Prophet (PBUH): The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Wear turbans and (thus) oppose the nations before you (Jews and Christians). (888) </p> <p> In this hadith, it is desired to distinguish Islamic clothing from the clothing of other nations.</p> <p> THE VIRTUE OF PRAYER WHILE WEARING A TURBAN</p> <p> 13) “One obligatory or voluntary prayer performed with a turban is equivalent to twenty-five prayers performed without a turban. One Friday prayer performed with a turban is equivalent to seventy prayers performed without a turban. (889)<br /> In a hadith narrated by Jabir (RA), the Prophet (PBUH) said: “A two-rakat prayer performed with a turban is more virtuous than a seventy-rakat prayer performed without a turban.” (890)<br /> 14) “As long as my community wears turbans over their skullcaps, they will not deviate from their nature (the right path). (891)<br /> 15) “Continue to wear the turban, for it is indeed a sign of the angels. And let it hang down behind you. (892) </p> <p> In the commentary of these hadiths it is stated as follows:</p> <p> “The turban increases the reward of prayer many times over. Because it is an adornment and a beauty in the presence of Allah. Allah (CC) has commanded us to adorn ourselves with the verse: “O sons of Adam, take your adornment at every prostration (i.e. in every prayer).” It is stated in a hadith: “Indeed, Allah (CC) is beautiful. He loves beauty.” Some people say, “The turban is not from the religion (religious duties) like eating and drinking.” They defended the abandonment of the turban with an argument like this. Nothing motivated them to do this other than blindly imitating others. Even if we accept that it is a custom as they say, we still say that the turban is truly the most honorable of customs. Because, it is the custom of the Prophet (PBUH). And he is, with the agreement of all Muslims, the most superior of creations. It has been said as an example: “The customs of the great are the greatest of customs.” However, the turban is part of the religion and one of the duties of the religion due to the hadiths of the Prophet (PBUH) on this subject. The turban is the sunnah of the Prophets and Messengers. It is enough for us as evidence that Gabriel (PBUH) descended wearing a turban.</p> <p> The wisdom and benefit of the turban is that it protects the body. Because, in hot countries, the turban protects against heat stroke and in cold countries, against cold. This protection becomes even more obvious when a part of it is wrapped under the chin and over the ears.</p> <p> One of its wisdoms is adornment and beauty during worship and in the divine presence. Wearing a turban is always desirable, especially during prayers. Because the reward of prayer increases thanks to it. (893) </p> <p> It is also stated in the book called Al-Ihtiyar that it is recommended to wear a turban during prayer. (894) </p> <p> The turban is actually a tradition of the Arab nation. </p> <p> Islam has established it, that is, it has accepted it as sunnah. This issue is understood from many hadiths. Although these hadiths are weak individually, since they are numerous, they have shown evidence that the turban is sunnah - as accepted and decided by the scholars.</p> <p> The best color for a turban is white. The fact that the Prophet (PBUH) wore a black turban during the conquest of Mecca and that the angels descended with yellow turbans during the battle of Badr was a requirement of the special conditions of that time. In fact, it is stated that wearing a black or green turban is also sunnah. (Ibn Abidin)</p> <p> The turban reminds one of piety. It prevents one from being seen in places forbidden by Allah (swt) and gives one a sense of shame. It keeps its owner away from games, entertainment and bad behavior. It is stated in some hadiths narrated by Ibn Adiy and Bayhaqi in Shuabul-Iman as follows:</p> <p> “Wear turbans so that you may increase in knowledge (make more progress).” “Turbans are the crowns of the Arabs.”</p> <p> In the hadith narrated by Daylami:</p> <p>It has been said, “Turbans are the dignity of the believers and the honor of the Arabs. When the Arabs take off their turbans, they lose their dignity.” (895) </p> <p> According to these statements, the symbol of Muslims in society is the turban. The skullcap and various top hats worn without being wrapped are not part of the clothing of Muslims.</p> <p> Hazrat Omar (RA) used to write letters to the army commanders asking them to continue wearing Islamic and Arab clothes and not to separate from them and to avoid Persian clothes. Because Islam wants to not resemble others in terms of appearance and to have its own unique clothes. It protects the believers from mixing with them so that they are not thought to be Muslims with their Islamic clothes.</p> <p> Because although trust in the inner world is necessary, the outer world also has an effect on the inner world. Actions occur with the feelings coming from within. However, a person whose inner world is proper benefits from the outer clothing. He receives light from it.</p> <p> This is the result of a surprising interest and connection between the external and internal worlds. Because the transition to action starts from the heart and the benefit returns to the heart. Evil actions are the same. They increase the darkness of the internal world. So let us do good and abandon evil. (896) </p> <p> The minimum amount of hanging of the turban is four fingers. The maximum is one hand (one hand's length). It is bid'ah to extend it below the middle of the waist. This is wasteful and is like the ruling of extending the garment too much. If he does this out of arrogance, it is haram. If it is not out of arrogance, it is makruh and contrary to the sunnah. In fact, it is recommended to let the turban hang. And this sunnah is from the sunnah of the extra sunnah (sunnah of the ghayr-i muekkede), which is the equivalent of the sunnah of the righteous. Although it is rewarding in the sunnah, there is no sin or isael (doing evil) in abandoning it. The fact that this act is sunnah of the muekkede is contrary to the truth. It is stated in the book called Kenz that it is recommended to wear a black turban and let one end of the turban hang down between the shoulders. The ruling on the turban is similar in most of the Hanafi books. (897) </p> <p> In the book called Kinya, it is stated that: “It is recommended for the jurists and scholars to wear a long turban and a wide dress.” It is probable that they had made it a custom and tradition for the jurists to wear a long turban. If in another country the jurists do not lengthen their turbans and are known by wearing a different dress and if a different dress has become a custom and tradition for them, then the jurist wears the dress that is common in that custom so that his scholarly position and himself are recognized and religious matters are asked of him, and then this dress is recommended. (898) </p> <p> Note: The sunnah for wrapping the turban is to let both ends hang down between the shoulders. When untying it, one should untie it as one wrapped it and wrap it again.
