بِسْــــــــــــــــــــــمِ اﷲِارَّحْمَنِ ارَّحِيم
The Islamic World Today in Hijri 1447
BEGINNING OF THE HIJRI YEAR
My Most Esteemed Brothers and Sisters;
Praise and glory be to Allah (celle celaluhu), I send my prayers and greetings to our Master, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who was sent as a mercy to the worlds, to his Ahl al-Bayt, to his Noble Companions, and I offer my blessings and prayers to all our believing brothers. I also extend my greetings and respect to all of you, and wish you health and wellness.
It is the Islamic calendar that regulates the social and political relations of Muslims and takes the migration of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as the date and the beginning of the calendar. The Hijri calendar was organized during the time of Hz. Omar (may Allah be pleased with him) based on the lunar year. The year in which the migration took place was the first year of the Hijri calendar and the first day of the first month of the year, Muharram, was considered the beginning of the new year.
For Muslims, the first night of the month of Muharram is the “New Year” night. In Islam, the new year begins on the first day of Muharram. Muslims must organize the months, days of worship, holidays, Ramadan and Sacrifice, Hajj, New Year, Zakat, etc. according to the Islamic calendar. Because Allah has declared the number of months as twelve. Our Lord says: In the sight of Allah (i.e. what is valid in Allah’s judgment), the number of months is certainly twelve. This is not the fabrication, supposition, theory, acceptance and adoption of this or that, but the record in Allah’s book on the day He created the heavens and the earth, the judgment of the writing written on that day, the necessity of the writing and decree written on that day, and the judgment of the true calendar, as determined and written by Allah. (at-Tawbah, 9/36)
According to commentators, what is meant by these months is the lunar months. Muslims organize their worship not according to the Gregorian months, which are arranged according to probability, but according to the lunar months, which are a tangible 'divine reality'. Because this calculation is really the correct calculation (et-Tawbah, 9/36). Based on this, Muslims celebrating other non-Islamic holidays, participating in them, and accepting the celebration days of actions that deny the truths revealed by Allah or are the product of thoughts that do not comply with them as holidays, does not mean anything other than supporting disbelief. It is stated that participating in the ceremonies of non-Islamic monotheistic and polytheistic religions and complying with anything from their religious ceremonies is considered to be a dimension that corrupts faith. (al-Fatawa al-Hindiya, IV, p. 342; XIV, p. 407).
Therefore, on Christmas Day, it is not permissible to do what Christians do on other religious holidays, to buy clothes for children with the intention of celebrating those days, or to eat the food they cook. These actions necessitate disbelief. It is necessary to avoid them… It is also understood from this that it is not permissible to honor the holy days of non-Muslims, such as Nevruz and Mihrijan. (Ibn Abidin, Reddul Muhtar, XVII, p. 310;)
The common view of Islamic sources is that celebrating all days and holidays established outside of the Islamic laws revealed by Allah is blasphemy. It is not possible for a Muslim to celebrate Christmas, the Gregorian New Year, or New Year's Eve or similar days set by certain people and institutions. It is one of the issues that leads a person to blasphemy in terms of belief.
The Republic of Turkey did not forget the calendar issue among the radical changes it made by adopting the Christian Western lifestyle together with the revolutions of the Westernization period, and for this purpose, on December 26, 1925, the Christian Gregorian calendar was adopted instead of the Islamic Hijri calendar. New Year's Day was also moved from Muharram to January 1, which is not actually the birthday of Jesus Christ but is accepted as such. The Western value judgments aimed at by the revolutions were legitimized over time by forcing the "Santa Claus Culture" among the people.
Since 325 AD, when the Byzantine Emperor Constantine accepted Christmas as a holiday, the Christian world has also traditionalized this day and kept it alive as a holiday. In reality, Christmas (New Year) celebrations have no connection with the birth of Jesus. The legend of Santa Claus was later invented by a priest named Saint Nicola. Christmas, a traditional Christian holiday, has now started to be popular and especially encouraged in Muslim countries. The scary part is that Muslims are interested in such greetings and are starting to drift away from Islam. Muslims must first remember the promise they made to Allah and be conscious of the dignity and consciousness befitting the title of “Muslim” bestowed upon them in accordance with the Quran and Sunnah. Because we are "satisfied with Allah as Lord, Islam as religion, and Muhammad (pbuh) as the prophet" (Bukhari, Ilim, 29, I'tisam, 3; Muslim, Iman, 56, Fedail, 134-136; Tirmidhi, Ilim, 10).
With the acceptance of the Gregorian calendar, which was only one of the revolutions of the Republic, obstacles were placed between the Muslims of Turkey and their thousand-year Islamic past, and from then on, the Christian Santa Claus culture became widespread among the people and westernization became the official state policy. Weekly holidays were changed to Sunday, and in 1935, Saturdays, which were the weekly holidays of the Jews, were made half-day, and in 1974, Saturdays were made a full day. However, the same did not apply to Fridays, which were the holiday of the Muslims.
My Esteemed Brothers and Sisters!
Everything a Muslim does should be according to Islam and in Islamic terms. In addition, the calendar of a Muslim should be the Hijri calendar. Because a Muslim will fast according to the Hijri calendar, perform the Hajj according to this calendar, perform the Eid according to this calendar, and sacrifice according to this calendar.
Also, according to the hadith, “Islam is superior. Nothing can be superior to it,” the Islamic calendar is the Hijri Calendar. No calendar can be superior to it. Likewise, a Muslim cannot be a satellite, cannot follow others, cannot follow others; he has his own personality, he cannot follow those who are not his. A Muslim is a leader, he must be in the lead. Of course, others must follow him. It is neither befitting of a Muslim’s meaning nor his personality to imitate and follow non-Muslims. A Muslim’s religion is perfect, it has found perfection and has become complete; it has no deficiencies. He has a religion that is fully developed.
I wish you all a happy Hijri New Year and pray to God Almighty that it will be a blessing.
The Islamic world is observing the 1447th year of the Hijra. Muslims, who have been counting the years with the "Hijra" for one thousand four hundred and forty seven years, divide the time into two as "before the Hijra" and "after the Hijra". The 1447th Hijri New Year that we observe today is the beginning of the migration of Hz. Muhammad (pbuh) and his companions to Medina in the year 622 according to the Gregorian calendar, after the idolaters did not recognize the right to live in Mecca.

Many thinkers in the Islamic world have invited Muslims to rethink their history in articles they published today. Stating that “the existence of a calendar called the Hijri Calendar is enough to explain the importance of the migration of our Prophet (pbuh) from Mecca to Medina,” Muslim thinkers called for the meaning of the migration to be rethought in order to save the Islamic world from the chaos and confusion it is in today.

Meanwhile, the Ruyet-i Hilal committee in Pakistan announced that the month of Muharram will begin on Tuesday, December 30, as the crescent cannot be observed. Commemorative programs will be held in mosques in Pakistan, India, Indonesia and many Islamic countries to commemorate the Hijra on the occasion of the new Hijri year.
“HIJRI NEW YEAR’S EVE”
Our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was born in Mecca on the morning of Monday, the twelfth of the month of Rabi'ul-awwal, which coincides with April 20, 571 CE. He migrated from Mecca to Medina in 622. He arrived in the village of Quba in Medina on Monday, September 20. This date became the Solar New Year for Muslims. The first day of the month of Muharram of that year became the beginning of the Lunar New Year.
The month of Muharram is one of the four months valued in the Quran, along with Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Rajab. (At-Tawbah 36)
