Beginning of Hijri History
The first Caliph to start history according to the lunar months was Omar ibn al-Khattab (ra), who took the migration of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) from Mecca to Medina as the beginning. Omar ibn al-Khattab (ra) accepted the migration in 622 AD as the beginning of Islamic history.
•The Hijri calendar is abbreviated as 'H' in writing. In Western languages, it is symbolized as 'A.H', which is the abbreviation of 'Anno Hegirae', meaning after the hijra. The date of 1.1.1 Hijri corresponds to the date of July 16, 622 AD. The Hijri (Islamic) months are twelve and are as follows: Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Akhir, Cemazi al-Akwal, Cemazi al-Akhir, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul-Qadah and Dhul-Hicjah.

•Religious Days and Nights in the Hijri (Islamic) Year: Hijri New Year: 1 Muharram,
Isra and Miraj: 27 Rajab,
The beginning of the fast: 1 Ramadan,
Laylat al-Qadr: One of the last ten days of Ramadan.
Eid al-Fitr: 1 Shawwal,
Eid al-Adha: 10 Dhul-Hijjah,
Hajj season: 8-13 Dhul-Hijjah

•The meaning of several hadiths is as follows:
(The lord of the months is Muharram, the lord of the days is Friday.) [Deylemi]

(The most virtuous fast after Ramadan is the fast in the month of Muharram, the month of Allah. The most virtuous prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.) [Muslim, Ibn Majah, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasai]

(If you are going to fast voluntarily, fast in the month of Muharram. Because it is the month of Allah. There is a day in that month on which Allah accepted the repentance of one of the previous nations. He also forgives the sins of those who repent on that day.) [Tirmidhi]

In order to gain the reward of voluntary worships, it is necessary to have the belief of Ahl as-Sunnah, to repent for sins by avoiding haram acts, to try to do the obligatory acts perfectly, and to intend to do that act as worship.

In the 17th year of the Hijra, a decision was made during the time of Hz. Omar, and the year of the Hijra was accepted as the first year of the Hijri Calendar, and the month of Muharram of that year was accepted as the beginning of the Hijri Lunar Calendar, and the date of July 16, 622, which coincided with the first of Muharram of that year, was accepted as the beginning of the Hijri Lunar Calendar. In practice, this is known as the Hijri Calendar. The Hijri calendar used in Islamic countries begins with Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD. The Hijri-Lunar calendar is defined according to the rotation of the moon around the earth.

•A year consists of 12 months called Muharram, Safar, Rabiul-Awwal, Rabiul-Akhir, Jumada-al-Awwal, Jumada-al-Akhir, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul-Qa'dah and Dhul-Hijjah. Each lunar month lasts approximately 29.5 days, resulting in a lunar year of 354 days. Therefore, there are 6 months of 29 days and 6 months of 30 days in the lunar calendar. Which months will last 29 or 30 days is determined by Sheikh ul-Islam, taking into account the phase of the moon.

•In addition to the Hijri calendar, the Rumi calendar was also used in the Ottoman Empire after 1678 in financial affairs. The beginning of the financial year is accepted as March 1. The Rumi year is 365 days long and is the same length as the Gregorian year, which corresponds to the solar year. The Rumi year exceeds the Hijri year, which is 354 days, by one year every 33 years. In order to eliminate this difference, a Hijra year is subtracted from the Rumi year every 33 years; this is called the slip year. There is also a 13-day difference between the two calendars. In addition, since the Rumi year started in 584 AD, 584 must be subtracted from the Gregorian year to find the Rumi year.

•The months are named as March, April, May, June, July, August, September, Teşrini-evvel, Teşrini-sani, Kanuni-evvel, Kanuni-sani, February. For example, the Gregorian date of January 1, 1993 corresponds to the Rumi date of 19 Kanuni-evvel 1408.

The Rumi year, which was used in financial transactions until the end of the Ottoman Empire, was abandoned with the adoption of the Gregorian calendar year in 1925.

•One of the issues that Muslims do not give importance to in the world today is unfortunately Islamic concepts and notions. So much so that the entire ummah has been under the influence of the cultural imperialism of the West and has started to shape its life accordingly.

Whatever belongs to our own culture and civilization has been forgotten and has been crushed under the influence of modern culture and the West. More precisely, we have become alienated from our own values.

•I think that the Messenger of Allah (saw) saw the current situation as if he had seen it fifteen centuries ago. If he had not seen it, he would not have said, "Whoever holds on to my Sunnah at a time when my Ummah is corrupt, he will have the reward of a hundred martyrs."

Unfortunately, it seems like we are living in those days, and even "like" is too much. We have become so alienated from Islamic values that even Muslims who embrace Islamic sensitivities can be looked down upon and despised by other Muslims.

The saddest part of the matter is that we, Muslims, have become more committed to the values of the West and modernism. We have completely forgotten our own values and have come to not even remember them.

•One of these, that is, one of the most important concepts that we have forgotten or are being made to forget, is the "HIJRI NEW YEAR". However; "HIJRA" or "HIJRI NEW YEAR" is a historical turning point for Muslims. We all know more or less what Muslims gained with the migration. Therefore, we desperately need such programs to regain those values that we have lost.

• As follows;

· So that we can re-read the examples of sacrifices made by Muslims by migrating throughout Islamic history,

· So that we can remember the difficulties, suffering, pain and oppression that Muslims experienced before the migration,

· To be able to re-equip ourselves with the courage to give up our wealth, property, mother, father, sister, brother, child, friend and enemy for the sake of this cause when necessary,

· To ensure that we do not give up, do not lose heart or lose hope in the face of the simplest obstacles and difficulties, and that our Lord will definitely show us a way out,

· To understand the consciousness of trusting in Allah and that there is no bargaining in faith,

· In order for us to regain the consciousness of brotherhood between the Ansar and the Muhajir,

· In order for our children not to drown in the swamp of blasphemy on Gregorian New Year's Eve,

· First of all, we absolutely need such programs to help our youth understand that we too have our own culture.

HIJRI NEW YEAR
It is the Islamic calendar that regulates the social and political relations of Muslims and takes the migration of the Prophet (pbuh) as the date and the beginning of the calendar. The Hijri calendar was organized in the time of Hz. Omar based on the lunar year. The year in which the migration took place was the first year of the Hijri calendar and the first day of the first month of the year, Muharram, was considered the beginning of the new year.

For Muslims, the first night of the month of Muharram is the "New Year's" night. In Islam, the new year begins on the first day of Muharram. Muslims must organize the months, days of worship, holidays, Ramadan and Qurban, Hajj, New Year's, Zakat, etc. according to the Islamic calendar. Because Allah has declared the number of months as twelve (et-Tawbah, 9/36).

•According to commentators, what is meant by these months is the lunar months. Muslims organize their worship not according to the Gregorian months, which are arranged according to probability, but according to the lunar months, which are a tangible 'divine reality'. Because this calculation is really the correct calculation (et-Tawbah, 9/36). Based on this, Muslims celebrating other non-Islamic holidays, participating in them, and accepting the celebration days of actions that deny the truths revealed by Allah or are the product of thoughts that do not comply with them as holidays, does not mean anything other than supporting disbelief. It is stated that participating in the ceremonies of non-Islamic monotheistic and polytheistic religions, and complying with anything from their religious ceremonies, will be considered to be a level that will corrupt faith (al-Fatawa al-Hindiya, IV, p. 342; XIV, p. 407).

•Therefore, on Christmas Day, it is not permissible to do what Christians do on other religious holidays, to buy clothes for children with the intention of celebrating those days, or to eat the food they cook. These actions entail disbelief. It is necessary to avoid them… It is also understood from this that it is not permissible to honor the holy days of non-Muslims, such as Nevruz and Mihrijan (İbn Abidin, Reddül Muhtar, XVII p. 310; Halil Gönenç, Bugün Meselelerine Fetvas, İstanbul 1984, II, p. 21).

•The common view of Islamic sources is that celebrating all days and holidays established outside the Islamic laws revealed by Allah is blasphemy. It is not possible for a Muslim to celebrate Christmas, the Gregorian New Year, or New Year's Eve or similar days set by certain people and institutions. These days, which are dangerous in terms of belief, are no different from other days. In addition, it is haram to buy and sell lottery tickets, either specifically or for New Year's. Since the lottery is a form of gambling, the money earned from them is also haram. Especially games such as bingo and swivel, played on New Year's Eve, all card and tile games, regardless of their purpose, and games played with slot machines are haram according to Islam (Yusuf Kerimoğlu, Emanet ve Ehliyet, II, p. 494; Halil Gönenç, ibid., II, 116, 208).

•In reality, Christmas celebrations have no connection with the birth of Jesus. The legend of Santa Claus was invented by a priest named Saint Nicola. Christmas, a traditional Christian holiday, has now started to be popular and encouraged in Muslim countries. The scary part is that Muslims are interested in such greetings and are drifting away from Islam. Muslims should first remember the promise they made to Allah and be conscious of the dignity and consciousness befitting the name “Muslim” bestowed upon them in accordance with the Quran and Sunnah. Because “We are pleased with Allah as our Lord, Islam as our religion, and Muhammad (pbuh) as our prophet” (Bukhari, Knowledge, 29, I'tisam, 3; Muslim, Faith, 56, Fedail, 134-136; Tirmidhi, Knowledge, 10).

•The Gregorian Calendar in Turkey The Christian calendar, which was first put into effect in 1917 under the name of Takvim-i Garbi during the time of the Union and Progress Party in the Ottoman Empire, was officially accepted during the radical revolutions that took place with the establishment of the Republic. With the law numbered 698 and dated 26 December 1925 on “Changing the Date Base in the Calendar”, the first day of January 1342 of the Hijri calendar was changed to 1 January 1926 and the new calendar came into effect as of this date. The law was made official in the minutes of the Turkish Grand National Assembly as follows:

•Law No: 698. Date of acceptance: 26.12.1925. Article 1. The international calendar (Gregorian) is accepted as the starting date in the official state calendar within the Republic of Türkiye.
Article 2. The day following the thirty-first day of the First Law of 1341 is the first day of the Second Law of 1926.
Article 3. The Hijri Lunar calendar is used in special cases, as it has always been. The beginning of the Hijri Lunar months is officially determined by the observatory.
Article 4. This law is valid on the date of its publication.
Article 5. The Council of Executive Ministers is responsible for the execution of the provisions of this law (TBMM Laws Journal, Vol. 1 V, Atatürk Revolution, Culture Ministry Publications, Ankara 1984, p. 497).
“Starting in 1927, the Muslims and Christians of Turkey began to use a common year for the first time. Likewise, for the first time, many Turks, following European customs, conveyed their good wishes to each other at the beginning of the year.” (See Paul Gentizon, Mustafa Kemal and the Awakening East, trans. Fethi Ülkü, Ministry of Culture Publications, Ankara 1983, p. 145. Gotthard Jaschke, New Turkey'de İslamlık, Turkish, Hayrullah Örs, Ankara, 1972, p. 29-30).
•With the acceptance of the Gregorian calendar, which was only one of the revolutions of the Republic, obstacles were placed between the Muslims of Turkey and their thousand-year Islamic past, and from then on, the Christian Santa Claus culture became widespread among the people and westernization became the official state policy. Weekly holidays were changed to Sunday, and in 1935, Saturdays, which were the weekly holidays of the Jews, were made half-day, and in 1974, Saturdays were made a full day. However, the same did not apply to Fridays, which were the holidays of the Muslims…..

What is the Hijri year and how did it begin? According to the starting time, two types of calendars are used today: Gregorian calendar, Hijri calendar…

•
Hazrat Suraka, who believed in our Prophet after seeing his condition, immediately went back to help our Prophet and stopped those who were coming behind him.

After a week's journey, our master the Messenger of Allah and Hazrat Abu Bakr arrived in the village of Quba near Medina on the eighth of the month of Rabi'ul-awwal, Monday.

On the twelfth Friday of the month of Rabi'ul-awwal, they reached Medina. The first day of the month of Muharram in that year, when the migration took place, was the beginning of the Muslim Hijri Lunar year. According to historians, this beginning day was in the six hundred and twenty-second year of the Gregorian year…

•
It was not easy for our Prophet to leave Mecca, they were very sad at the separation. Because, he was leaving his homeland, Mecca, the most precious of the towns praised by Allahu ta'ala. He turned his camel towards the sacred sanctuary and said, in a sad state,

At that moment Gabriel (peace be upon him) came and said,

- O Messenger of Allah! Are you longing for your homeland? Are you sad? Our Prophet said;

•- “Yes, I am longing!” they said. They felt relieved when Gabriel (peace be upon him) read the 85th verse of the Qasas Surah, which gave the good news that he would return to Mecca and conquer it…

I congratulate our readers on the 1429th year of the Hijri and pray to God that it will be a means of goodness.

•It is necessary to fast on the first day of the month of Muharram (the first day of the Hijri year) in order to protect oneself from the sins committed this year and to have the sins committed forgiven.

•On the first night of the month of Muharram, it is necessary to perform the tasbih prayer with the following intention.
Intention: “Oh my Lord, grant me Your forgiveness and Your pleasure this year. Grant me the opportunity to fill my newly opened book of deeds with deeds that will please Your pleasure. Protect me from deeds that will incur Your wrath. Allah (swt) is the Greatest.”
In the 1st Rakat: 1 Fatiha, 1 Ayet-el Kursi
In the 2nd Rakat: 1 Fatiha, 1 Amene'r Rasul (If possible, the first two verses of Surah Al-i Imran are added)
In the 3rd Rakat: 1 Fatiha, 1 Huwallahullazi (i.e. the last 3 verses of the Surah Al-Hashr)
In the 4th Rakat: 1 Fatiha, 1 Ihlas Sharif (After the prayer, istighfar is asked and Salawat is recited and prayers are made.)

•It has been reported that the past sins of the person who fasts on the first Friday of Muharram (it cannot be fasted only on Thursday or Saturday, it must be fasted on both) will be forgiven. (“The past sins of the person who fasts on the first Friday of Muharram will be forgiven.” Hadith Sharif, from Enes) (Fasting on Thursday, Friday and Saturday will atone for sins and earn the reward of 900 years of worship.)

•It has been stated that whoever fasts on any Friday during this month, together with the previous and following days (i.e. Thursday, Friday, Saturday), will be given the reward of 900 years of worship. (“Whoever fasts three days of the sacred month, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Allah (swt) will write for him 900 years of worship.” Hadith Sharif / Ibn-i Şahin, Ibn-i Asakir, Ihya (Imam-i Gazali), Gunye (A. Kadir Geylani)

Also, the most virtuous fast after Ramadan is the fast observed in this month. “Whoever fasts one day in Muharram, he will have thirty days (of fasting) for each day.” Hadith Sharif, Tabarani

•A 6-rakat prayer is performed once between the first and tenth of the month of Muharram, with a salam every 2 rakats. This prayer can be performed between the evening and the night prayer, or if it cannot be performed at this time, it can be performed after the night prayer. Intention: “O my Lord, I intend to perform the prayer for Your Pleasure, If any of my neighbors, my religious brothers or anyone else has a right over me, so that this right is paid, Allah (swt) is the Greatest…”
In the 1st Raka'ah: 1 Fatiha, 1 Ayet-el Kursi, 11 Ikhlas Sharif In the 2nd Raka'ah: 1 Fatiha, 10 Ikhlas Sharif
In the 3rd Raka'ah: 1 Fatiha, 1 Takahur Surah, 11 Ikhlas Sharif In the 4th Raka'ah: 1 Fatiha, 10 Ikhlas Sharif
In the 5th Raka'ah: 1 Fatiha, 3 Kafirun Surahs, 11 Ikhlas Sharif In the 6th Raka'ah: 1 Fatiha, 10 Ikhlas Sharif (After the prayer, du'a is said.)

In this month and always, Allah (swt) should be remembered with tongue and heart. Remembering Allah (swt) is the greatest act of worship. In the Name of Allah (swt), the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. " "REMEMBERING Allah (swt) IS SURELY THE GREATEST (ACT OF WORSHIP)." ANKEBUT/45 "

•END OF YEAR PRAYER:
Whoever reads at the end of Dhul-Hijjah (Must be read);
“O Allah! Whatever I have done this year of the things that You disapproved of and forbade me, I have forgotten them, but You have not forgotten them. You gave me respite while You were Able to punish me, and You invited me to repentance while I dared to disobey You. O Allah! I ask Your forgiveness for all this. Forgive me! O Owner of Generosity! O Owner of Majesty and Honor! Whatever deeds I have done this year that You have pleased and promised me a reward for, I ask You to accept them from me and not to despair of You! O Owner of Generosity, accept them! Send blessings and salutations upon our Master Muhammad (PBUH) and his family!” Satan will say, “We were exhausted this year and suffered hardship committing these sins, but He erased them all in an instant,” and will throw soil in his face.

•NEW YEAR PRAYER:
Whoever reads it at the beginning of Muharram (Must be read);
If he says, “Oh Allah! You are the Eternal and the Ancient. This is the new year. I ask You for protection from Satan and his friends, for help against this soul that commands evil, and to occupy myself with deeds that will bring me closer to You. O Generous One, accept it!” Satan says, “We have given up hope on this person,” and Allah (swt) assigns two Angels to protect him throughout the year. (Hadith, Source: Alemle Safuri, Nüzhetü'l-mecâlis, 1/156)

Important note: According to our religion, night comes first and day comes later. Let's do our calculations accordingly. In other words, when the evening call to prayer is recited on Thursday, we enter Friday, and when the evening call to prayer is recited the next day, Friday ends.
