Just as the Sunnah is stated as a proof in the Holy Quran, the Prophet (pbuh) also emphasized the importance of his Sunnah and explained that his ummah should uphold the Sunnah. There are many hadiths related to this and hadith scholars have carefully compiled them in hadith books. Here, we will first mention a few of the many hadiths and then try to discuss the situation of the Sunnah in the Quran.

     The meaning of one of these hadiths is as follows:
    “I have been given the Holy Quran and something like it (another proof). It is near that a person will come who will sit on his couch with his stomach full and say, ‘Hold fast to this Quran only, and whatever you find lawful in it, consider it lawful, and whatever you find unlawful, consider it unlawful.’ Surely, what the Messenger of Allah has declared unlawful is what Allah has declared unlawful.” 1

     Another hadith with the same content was narrated by Miqdam b. Ma'dikerib (may Allah be pleased with him). 2
The great scholar of interpretation, Imam Qurtubi, lists one or two possibilities regarding the understanding of these hadiths: “I was given the Quran and the like” The word has two meanings. The first is the recited apparent revelation (i.e. the Quran), the second is the unread hidden revelation, i.e. the sunnah. Another possibility is that the Quran is the recited apparent revelation and the permission to explain what is in the book in a similar manner. Therefore, it is concluded that it is obligatory to obey the commands of the Sunnah just as it is obligatory to obey the commands of the Quran. 3
    There are many similar hadiths that point to the authenticity of the Sunnah. In one of the hadiths where the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) emphasized the importance of the Quran and the Sunnah together, he said, “I have left you with two things: the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger. As long as you hold fast to them, you will never go astray.” commands.4

    Yazid b. Erkam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates another hadith with the same meaning, at a slightly longer length: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “I am leaving you with two things which, if you follow them, you will never go astray after me. One of them is greater than the other. The first is the Book of Allah, which is like a rope stretched from the sky to the earth. The other is my own line, my Ahl al-Bayt. These two things will not be separated from each other until they come to me at the pool of Kawthar in Paradise. So think about them, how you will succeed me after me.”5

    Another variant of this hadith is narrated by Imam Malik. According to his narration, the Prophet (pbuh) said: “I am leaving you with two things. As long as you follow them, you will never go astray: The Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger.”6

      In another hadith, Abu Musa (ra) narrates: “The Prophet (pbuh) said: “The example of my example and that which the Almighty God has sent with me is like that of this man: A man comes to his people and says, ‘I saw the enemy army with my own eyes. I am informing you of the danger. Take precautions!’ Some of his people follow his advice and leave that place at night without panicking. Some of them deny the messenger and do not leave their place. However, in the morning, the army catches them and destroys them. This comparison shows those who obey me and follow what I have brought, and those who rebel against me and deny and deny what I have brought from the Almighty God.” 7
     In many hadiths, the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) considered obedience to him as equal to obedience to Allah. In the hadith narrated by Bukhari through Abu Hurayrah, the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: “All of my Ummah will enter Paradise except those who resist. When it was asked to them: ‘Who is the resister, O Messenger of Allah?’ they said: ‘Whoever obeys me has obeyed Allah, and whoever disobeys me has disobeyed Allah.” 8 has commanded.
    In another narration by Abu Hurairah, it is narrated that our Prophet said: “Whoever obeys me has surely obeyed Allah. Whoever rebels against me has surely rebelled against Allah.”

    The Messenger of Allah, drawing attention to the importance of following the Sunnah for generations, said, “Whoever holds on to my Sunnah during the time of corruption in my Ummah will be given the reward of a hundred martyrs.”9 have commanded.

    The Messenger of Allah (saw) always drew attention to the importance of the Quran and the Sunnah. Irbâz b. Sâriya (ra) narrates a sermon that he gave after leading the prayer, which resembled a farewell speech: “One day, the Messenger of Allah (saw) led us in prayer. Then, turning his face to the congregation, he gave a very eloquent and meaningful sermon. So much so that the eyes of the listeners filled with tears and their hearts filled with excitement. One of the congregation said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, this is as if it were a farewell speech. What do you advise us to do?’”You, he said, I advise you to be pious towards Allah and to listen to and obey His commands, even if you have an Abyssinian slave as your leader. After me, those who remain alive among you will see many differences. So I remind you of my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs; follow them and hold fast to them. And be extremely careful and alert against what is brought forth later. Because every new thing brought forth (contrary to what is in the Sunnah) is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance and deviation.” 10 There is the following addition at the beginning of the Abu Dawud narration of this hadith: “Be aware, I was given the Book and the same amount of the Sunnah.” The rest of the narration continues in the above meaning. Finally, there is the following addition: “Be aware that the meat of a domestic donkey (which is not mentioned in the Quran) is not lawful for you, and that of wild animals with canine teeth, as well as the lost ones of those who have a contract, is unlawful. However, if the owner of the property has deliberately abandoned it because he has no need for it, that is an exception. When a person passes by a people, it is their duty to honor them. If they do not honor them, then that person should punish them in the amount of honor they deserve.”

    The companions who took their lessons from the Messenger of Allah (saw) completely followed the Sunnah. They also drew attention to the importance of the Sunnah. Let us quote one or two examples: It was narrated from Omar Ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "You have been left in the bright Islam, whose night is like the day. Be on the religion of the Bedouins in the desert and the children in the neighborhood schools. (Follow what is taught in the verses and hadiths as they are, imitate them without adding anything from your own.) 11

   Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) also says: “Whoever wants to follow a path should choose it from the path of the dead. For it is not safe to be safe from the trial of the living. As for the dead, they are the companions of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). They are the best of this Ummah. They are the purest in heart, the deepest in knowledge, and the most sincere in deeds. Allah has chosen them for the companionship of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and for the establishment of His religion. Therefore, realize their superiority, follow their path, and take their morals and lifestyles as examples for yourself as much as you can. For they were on the right path.12

    On another occasion, Ibn Mas'ud (ra) said: “Indeed, the best word is the book of Allah. The best path is the path of Muhammad (pbuh). The worst of things is that which is brought forth later and is contrary to religion.”13

    The hadiths about the importance of the Sunnah in religion are of course not limited to these. We are content with these hadiths that we have quoted as examples. After this, we will try to evaluate the situation of the Sunnah in relation to the Quran.
